The story of Wildflour
Without Jean Wood, there would have been no Wildflour. A high school teacher in Fairfax County, Va., she saw a bleak future for her autistic students and decided to do something about it.
In 1994, she took her idea for a nonprofit gourmet bakery to Jim Rogan, the executive director and founder of E-Tron, a non-profit corporation founded in Virginia in 1986 in order to create a normal work environment for disabled adults. Jean and Jim enlisted the help of the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board, and a business was born.
In 1997, Jean moved to Connecticut for family reasons. With her blessings, pastry chef Alberto SanGiorgio, took over the reins of Wildflour. He has expanded its offerings to include gourmet cakes, pastries and sandwiches, which you can savor right in Wildflour's cafe.
Our mission
Wildflour combines a passion for food with a sterling commitment to giving opportunities to developmentally challenged workers to contribute to their community. While busy making the tastiest food in town, our assistants (each of them developmentally challenged or autistic) are building life skills, developing friendships and earning the satisfaction of a paycheck.
